What is Virtual Health?

Virtual health refers to "virtual visits" that take place between patients and clinicians via communications technology - the video and audio connectivity that allows "virtual" care from a distant location. Virtual health also encompasses patient driven virtual communications such as secure messaging, teleconferences and video chatting with the MHS Nurse Advice Line ( )

How do virtual health appointments work at GLWACH?

A virtual health appointment means a patient at GLWACH can be seen by a provider at another location with the use of video equipment and/or a virtual health cart.

The distant provider guides the virtual health cart nurse in real time at GLWACH to assist with the examination using tele-diagnostic equipment like a digital stethoscope, otoscope or high-precision camera. The distant provider conducts an examination to include assessing patient’s heartbeat, breathing, ears, nose and throat, as though they were sitting in the same room. Where helpful the local nurse may facilitate assessments to support distant provider’s decision information.

Virtual health appointments save the patient time by keeping them at GLWACH instead of having to travel to a distant network provider.

What kinds of specialty care are serviced through virtual health?

GLWACH offers Virtual Health services for the following:

  • TBI speech therapy and neuropsychology
  • Adult ENT
  • Pediatric Pulmonology
  • Critical care (ICU)

Is virtual health safe and right for me?

GLWACH is very careful in establishing any virtual health service to ensure it is clinically accepted within any specialty care community and by the providers performing the actual care. All care given is by fully credentialed and privileged providers who must meet the highest health care standards in the industry. While GLWACH encourages all patients to try virtual health they may opt-out or request a second opinion when not satisfied with their care.

Who is eligible for virtual health care?

Beneficiaries who receive care at GLWACH are eligible for virtual health appointments. Specialty care providers review a patient’s medical case to determine if VH can be used to diagnose and treat a condition or illness. Where safe and available, GLWACH may offer such services and request patient’s openness to potentially better options for their health care.
