Public Health Nursing Clinic




Mission:  Army Public Health Nursing enables Total Force readiness through promoting population-focused health, mitigating disease and injury, assuring Force Health Protection, informing policy, and responding to emerging health threats.

Effective 12 September 2017, the Public Health Nursing Clinic does not issue Self Care cards for the pharmacy.


General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital (GLWACH) Pharmacies maintain a Self Care/Health Promotion Program to enable beneficiaries to obtain over-the-counter (OTC) items from GLWACH Pharmacies to prevent and treat urgent / non-routine conditions without requiring the patient to make an appointment with a provider.


Patients can request self care/health promotion medication at any GLWACH pharmacy.


A list of medications available for self-care can be found at any of the GLWACH pharmacies. Patients will be limited to 4 self care items per family every 2 weeks.



Services and Programs:

Tobacco Cessation Program:


The “Ready To Quit” class is offered every 1st and 3rd Tuesday from 0900-1100 in GLWACH Room 111.


This motivational class benefits include:                                   


• Information about medications

• Education by a Registered Nurse

• Information regarding nutrition by a Registered Dietician

• Appointment with a Pharmacist

• Prescription medications (Chantix, Zyban and nicotine patches).

Pregnant Postpartum Physical Fitness (P3T):


This program is an adjunct to the post mandatory physical fitness training program. Pregnant Soldiers are provided education for self-care during and after pregnancy, as well as skills to parent and care for their newborns. In accordance with AR 40-501 paragraph 7-9, (7), upon confirmation of pregnancy, Commanders will enroll their pregnant Soldiers into Pregnant Postpartum Physical Fitness Program.

Latent Tuberculosis (TB) Clinic:


The TB clinic is responsible for evaluating all positive TB skin test of military, beneficiaries

and DOD civilians 18 yrs and older. In addition, this clinic manages the care of clients with latent TB infection (noninfectious TB) and TB disease.

Child Youth Services (CYS):


Public Health Nurses serve as health consultants to the CYS providing Special Needs Accommodation Program (SNAP) reviews and coordination with EFMP services.

Health Promotion:


Disease prevention is our goal. Public Health Nursing Clinic educates military beneficiaries and DOD employees regarding lifestyle behaviors that encourage health promotion.

This goal is met through providing disease prevention and intervention classes on topics such as hypertension, heart disease, cancer and infectious diseases. In addition, Army Public Health Nursing service is available to support unit-sponsored health fairs with health education materials.

Travel Clinic:


Our goal in Public Health Nursing Clinic is to provide quality preventive travel medicine by providing active duty Service Members on leave, Tricare beneficiaries on leave or on accompanied PCS orders with the knowledge and the ability to be in charge of their own wellness outside of the United States. Public Health Nursing Clinic provides a complete consultation with pre-travel evaluation, vaccination review and prescriptions for administration.


The Clinic is open for business every Monday through Friday by appointment only.


Note: The Public Health Travel Clinic does not see any patients under 18 years old.  They must be seen in the Pediatrics Clinic.

Surveillance Programs:


Our surveillance program covers all reportable diseases in accordance with military regulations, local, state, and federal laws. Our program involves HIV notification and counseling, TB monitoring, including direct observation therapy when required, as well as the monitoring and reporting of various other diseases such as rabies, Salmonella, Hanta Virus, Influenza and Sexually Transmitted Infections.
